Modeling a closed-loop vaccine supply chain with transshipments to minimize wastage and threats to the public: a system dynamics approach

Purpose This study aims to focus on building a conceptual closed-loop vaccine supply chain (CLVSC) decrease wastage and counterfeit/fake vaccines. Design/methodology/approach Through focused literature review, the framework for CLVSC is described, system dynamics (SD) research methodology used build causal loop diagram (CLD) of proposed model. Findings In battle against COVID-19, waste management systems have become overwhelmed, which has created negative environmental extremely hazardous societal impacts. A key contributing factor unused doses, shown as source The findings identify design transshipment operations potential theft. Research limitations/implications contributes establishing pandemic-specific VSC structure. model informs current COVID-19 pandemic well future pandemics. Social implications large part impact vaccines human well-being, this can be avoided with proper CLVSC. Originality/value develops novel overarching SD CLD by integrating epidemic disease transmission, enhances policymakers’ understanding importance collection, handling threats public, are born through illicit activities that rely stolen doses.
